What We Are Doing
The Help Me Grow (HMG) National Center, in partnership with Manatt Health and HMG affiliates and partners, designed a Return on Investment (ROI) Calculator and HMG ROI Toolkit for the HMG Model and Affiliate Network as a means to assist affiliates with estimating HMG-specific savings and ROI. The Help Me Grow (HMG) Return on Investment (ROI) Calculator and Business Case templates are only available to HMG Systems who are in full Implementation of the HMG Model, as determined by the annual Fidelity Assessment, and who have been formally onboarded to a ROI cohort and trained in the use of the ROI Toolkit, by the National Center.
Cost-savings data can be an effective tool and critical metric for demonstrating an early childhood system’s ability to efficiently use resources to maximize impact, and for helping funders and stakeholders understand the value of their contributions
Affiliates have been successful in leveraging the HMG ROI Calculator and toolkit to demonstrate impactful cost savings, including demonstrated ROI in both the short term (within one year) and long term (beyond one year), as well as several systems’ realization of sizable cost savings such as $15 and $29 in quantifiable savings for every $1 invested in HMG.
What is the HMG ROI Calculator?
The HMG ROI Calculator is an Excel-based tool that may be leveraged by HMG Affiliates who are in full implementation of the HMG Model to quantify savings generated by their HMG system and illustrate the cross-sector benefits of the HMG Model. The ROI Calculator is designed to be used in conjunction with the HMG Business Case and other HMG ROI Toolkit resources to articulate the Model’s impacts to funders, partners, and other stakeholders. As the only multi-sector ROI calculator, Affiliates are able to calculate their savings across a subset of services provided by HMG, as well as across a variety of sectors and timeframes.
The ROI Calculator was developed with input from a subset of HMG affiliates and partners. Information gathered from these various stakeholders resulted in the identification of a diverse and multi-pronged set of services that HMG affiliates provide to their families and communities. Leveraging findings from an extensive literature review, as well as cost and impact data collected directly from the HMG National Center and affiliates, seven intervention categories where savings could be calculated, were identified. These include:
- Diversion from Unnecessary Developmental/Behavioral Assessments and Early Intervention (IDEA Part C) Evaluations
- Referral to Early Detection and Intervention for Child Developmental Delays
- Positive Parenting Services and Supports
- Home Visiting Program Referrals
- Referral for SNAP/WIC Benefits
- Maternal Depression Screening and Treatment
- Early Preventative Dental Care
The HMG ROI Calculator is designed to help HMG affiliates:
- Document quantifiable cost savings associated with the services they provide
- Estimate the total savings generated, by sector, and ROI to the HMG system
